Micaela is a social economy specialist at the Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health at Glasgow. Her work advocates for an inclusive and diverse social economy, where social enterprises and voluntary and community organisations are among the providers of public services.

Micaela has extensively researched and consulted on issues of social economies and of social exclusion, particularly in northern English city regions (Greater Manchester and Tyne and Wear). She’s experienced in evaluating place-based regeneration programmes and contributed to the revision of Indices of Multiple Deprivation (Wales) while working at the Centre for Urban Policy Studies, University of Manchester.

  • Leads exploratory research on the development and implementation of Community Wealth Building in Scotland (RSE funded)
  • Doctor of philosophy (PhD) in Human Geography, Durham University
  • Masters in Applied Social Research, University of Manchester
  • Chair of Scotland Section, Regional Studies Association (RSA)
  • Member of the Editorial Board member of VOLUNTAS (International Journal of Voluntary and Non-profit Organisations)
  • Visiting Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg

In my own words… 

For me, the focus of this work will be about understanding how socially innovative organisations currently use AI and support improvements in this field to help people and communities.

Rebooting data science to build a better future is all about harnessing AI for the common good.
