Datavysts: a definition

plural noun
A new hybr-eed of data scientists and social innovators who bridge the gap between rapidly advancing technology and increasing societal needs.
Blending disciplines, they form a diverse network of collaborative thinkers and doers which harnesses AI and data science to serve common good.
Origin
An evolution from data scientists, catalysts and activists.
Our mission is to co-create not only cutting-edge solutions to our greatest social and environmental problems, but also a vision of society that’s supported and enabled by data science and artificial intelligence.
While the growing presence of artificial intelligence in our lives is inevitable, its purpose remains uncertain.
As we face multiple global crises, innovation is needed more than ever to enable, rather than erode, a healthy society. But how do we make emerging technology work harder for human needs as a whole; to serve the common good rather than the self-interest of the few?
Our purpose is to reboot the role of AI and data science to serve social innovation — and help build a better future for all.
We’re united by the belief that AI & data science should break new ground for the benefit of people — without breaking the ecological boundaries of our planet.
Our network is an unprecedented collaboration between those who can bridge the gap between advancing technology and our increasing social and environmental needs.
Funded by Horizon Europe and UK Research & Innovation, the Datavysts bring together multidisciplinary research fellows across five universities, their academic supervisors and real-world experts in data science and social innovation.
Together we’ll work to discover the most effective, ethical and responsible ways to integrate data science and artificial intelligence (AI) with social innovation.
The Datavysts
The hosts + lead partners
We innovate not for the sake of it, but for the sake of humanity.
Our work asks what is the need and how best can we respond to it, building our research and practice around what’s essential for people to live well and equitably, in balance with the ecological limits of our planet.
We’re bound by an independent, transparent research agenda that promotes the shared ownership of data science and what it can do when powered by social purpose. For all of us, not the few.
We work hand in hand with the parts of society that call for real solutions, with the goal of making them beneficial to the whole.
We co-create with and for communities, together striving for useful, inclusive results that inspire grassroots innovation.
